The easiest way to access your locked android device is by using your gmail sign in. But in the situation where by you forgot your password, you can try the alternative by performing a hard reset.
(Note: All the data stored on your device would be erased but on your memory card would still remain intact)
1. Turn off the device
2. Press and hold the volume up(+) key along side the power key simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds.( If this method doesn't work then try the volume down(-) and power key combination)
3. The device would power up and and a menu would pop up. Scroll down/up to restore factory settings using the volume keys to scroll and execute using the power key. Upon doing this, the device would reboot and that's all......your device is back to life!.
If the above does not work for you then you can try holding the volume key along with the home key and power botton.
User's should also note that this method varies on the type of device of the individual.
